The argument in favor of using filler text goes something like this: If you use any real content in the Consulting Process anytime you reach.

Winter reading has its own rhythm. The nights draw in, the heating clicks on, and there is a natural pull towards the sofa, a blanket, and a good book. But those quiet hours can blur together. By February, you might remember that you loved a novel but not why, or you might forget the quotation that struck you on a dark Tuesday evening. A book journal solves this gently. It is not a school exercise or a reading challenge to be won. It is a simple notebook where you record titles, favourite quotations, and brief impressions after each chapter. That small act of noting things down helps you remember what you read during busy weeks, when your attention is pulled in a dozen directions. It also turns reading into a more reflective, comforting ritual — one that suits the season perfectly.
You do not need anything fancy. A slim A5 notebook with a hard cover is ideal because it lies flat on your lap or a side table. Lined pages suit most people, though dotted or plain paper works if you like to sketch a little. Choose a pen that glides smoothly — a fountain pen, a fine-liner, or a trusty ballpoint. Keep a few sticky tabs or a small pencil case nearby so you can mark pages you want to return to. The most important thing is to keep the notebook within arm’s reach of your favourite reading spot. If it lives on a shelf across the room, you will not use it. Treat it as part of your winter reading kit, alongside your bookmark and your warmest socks.
Start with a couple of opening pages for your winter reading list. Jot down the books you hope to read, borrow, or revisit. Leave space to add titles as recommendations come your way. Then, for each book, create a simple entry. You can use a double-page spread or a single page, depending on how much you like to write. At the top, note the title, author, and the date you started. When you finish, add the closing date and a one-line verdict. In between, keep a running log. After each chapter or reading session, write the date, the chapter number or page range, and two or three lines. You might also reserve a small section at the back for quotations you want to keep. This framework is light enough to maintain but detailed enough to bring the book back to life later.
Keep it brief. The goal is not to summarise the plot — the book already does that. Instead, capture what the chapter stirred in you. Try answering three questions in a sentence each: What happened that mattered? What did I notice or feel? What question do I have now? Then copy out one quotation that stood out, even if it is just a phrase. If you are reading non-fiction, note the main argument or a fact you want to remember. If you are reading poetry, write down the line that made you pause. This takes two minutes. Over a winter, those small notes become a rich record of your reading life, and they help you recall the book’s atmosphere long after you have turned the final page.
A book journal thrives when it is part of a wider cosy routine. Create a corner that invites you to linger: a lamp with a warm bulb, a soft throw, a cushion for your back, and a mug of something hot. Herbal tea, hot chocolate, or spiced apple drink all work well. As you settle down to read, place your notebook on the arm of the chair. After a chapter, sip your drink and write your impressions. You might also note the weather outside or the scent of a candle. These small sensory details — rain against the window, the crackle of a fire, the taste of ginger — become anchors for memory. They make your journal not just a record of books but a record of winter itself.
Some weeks will be too full. That is normal. The trick is to lower the bar rather than abandon the practice. On hectic days, write only the date and one word — “tense”, “beautiful”, “confusing”. Or simply note the page you reached. A single line is enough to keep the thread alive. Keep your notebook in your bag or beside your bed so you can jot a thought while waiting for the kettle to boil. Set a weekly review, perhaps on a Sunday evening, to fill any gaps and read back over your entries. You will quickly see patterns in your reading mood. And when a quiet evening finally arrives, you will be glad of those small notes. They turn scattered minutes into a lasting winter comfort, one page at a time.
