Begin With the Bed

A guest bedroom in winter asks one question of you: will your visitor be warm at three in the morning? Everything else is detail. Start with the bed itself and build outwards. A 13.5 tog duvet is the sensible choice for a chilly room, but real comfort comes from layers your guest can pull over or push away without getting up. Fold a cellular blanket or a wool throw across the foot of the bed, and leave a second one on a chair within easy reach. A hot water bottle, filled an hour before they arrive and slipped under the covers, takes the chill off the sheets and stays warm long after they have climbed in. Cover it with a knitted sleeve or a folded pillowcase so it does not feel harsh against bare feet.

Two pillows per person, one firmer than the other, gives choice without clutter. Air the linen rather than ironing it the same morning; if the room has been shut up for weeks, open the window wide for twenty minutes early in the day, then close it and let the radiator work. Damp, still air is what makes a spare bed feel unwelcoming, not the temperature on the thermostat.

Light the Room Kindly

Overhead lighting in a guest room is usually either harsh or useless. A bedside lamp is the single most appreciated addition, and it needs to be genuinely usable: switched on and off from the pillow without stretching, with a warm white bulb rather than a cool one. A 40 to 60 watt equivalent is plenty for reading. If the lamp has three settings, so much the better.

Think about the journey to the bathroom in the dark, too. A small night light plugged into a hallway socket, or a lamp left on a low setting overnight, saves your guest from fumbling along unfamiliar walls. Leave a torch in the bedside drawer — power cuts are rare but disorientating in a strange house — and make sure the landing light is easy to find by touch. These cost almost nothing and make a disproportionate difference.

The Bedside Tea Tray

A tray on the bedside table is the touch guests remember. Keep it small enough that it does not crowd the lamp, and stock it with things that are useful at seven in the morning or eleven at night, when nobody wants to wander downstairs in a dressing gown.

• A mug, a couple of teabags, and a few sachets of hot chocolate or herbal tea
• A small carton of long-life milk, or fresh milk replaced daily in a little jug
• A flask of hot water, if you would rather not leave a kettle in the room
• A bottle of water and a glass — central heating is dehydrating
• Two or three biscuits, shortbread or ginger nuts, on a small plate
• A coaster, so rings do not appear on the wood

If there is a spare plug socket nearby, a small kettle is a genuinely luxurious addition, though a vacuum flask is safer and quieter. Either way, put a small bin beside the table and keep the whole arrangement easy to wipe clean.

Warmth, Air and the Floor

Cold feet undo good bedding. If the room has bare boards, a rug beside the bed is essential. Check the radiator before your guest arrives, bleed it if it gurgles, and make sure the valve is open. Thermal or lined curtains drawn at dusk hold heat in far better than thin ones, and a draught excluder at the door makes a noticeable difference to a room above a porch. A spare dressing gown on a hook and a pair of thick socks in the drawer are small gestures that say you have thought about the cold.

Balance warmth with ventilation: a stuffy room becomes unbearable by the second night. Show your guest how to adjust the radiator, and mention that the window can be opened for a few minutes without wasting heat. Fresh air is not the enemy of a cosy room.

Space to Settle In

Guests rarely complain about empty wardrobes, but they notice them. Clear a shelf and a rail, and leave four or five hangers. A couple of hooks on the back of the door, some drawer space for small items, and a surface for a wash bag all help someone feel like a resident rather than a visitor. Stack clean towels on the bed so they do not have to ask, and add a spare toilet roll within sight.

Beyond that, the small comforts are quietly practical: tissues, a phone charger, a hairdryer, a couple of magazines or a paperback, and the wifi password written on a card rather than recited. A folded blanket on the armchair, even in a warm house, gives permission to feel chilly without apology.

The Welcome Itself

All of this preparation is really a form of attention, and it shows most clearly in the first ten minutes. Meet your guest with a hot drink, take their coat, and show them the room properly rather than waving at the door. Point out the spare blankets, the tray, the switch for the lamp, and tell them to help themselves to anything in the kitchen. Then leave them to unpack and settle.

Ask about breakfast the night before, so you are not clattering about at seven trying to guess. A warm room, a lit lamp, a full flask and a bed that has been aired and softened will do more for a winter visit than any amount of fussing. Small preparations, made in advance and offered without ceremony, are what turn a spare room into somewhere a guest is genuinely glad to stay.
