The argument in favor of using filler text goes something like this: If you use any real content in the Consulting Process anytime you reach.

There is a particular kind of British winter evening that calls for more than a single blanket thrown over your knees. The heating clicks off at ten, the windows rattle gently, and you find yourself wanting to be warm without feeling sealed inside a plastic bag. This is where layering comes into its own. Just as you would dress in several thin jumpers rather than one enormous coat, your rooms benefit from a series of lighter textiles working together.
The principle is simple: each layer traps a pocket of still air, and still air is an excellent insulator. Two or three modest layers will usually outperform one thick one, and they give you far more control. When the sun comes through the window at midday, you can peel a layer away. When the temperature drops after dark, you can add it back. Natural fabrics such as wool, linen and cotton are ideal because they breathe, meaning you stay warm without waking up clammy at two in the morning.
Before you think about cushions and throws, deal with the places where heat actually escapes. Windows are the weakest point in most homes, and heavy curtains are the most cost-effective way to stop warmth vanishing into the night.
Look for curtains with a proper lining, or add a separate thermal lining to curtains you already own. A good rule of thumb is that the fabric should have some weight to it — a wool blend, a heavy cotton, or a dense velvet all work well. Length matters too: curtains that stop just below the sill let cold air spill downwards into the room, so aim for floor-length where you can, or at least below the radiator so warm air is directed into the space rather than straight up the glass.
A wool throw is the single most useful textile you can own between October and March. Wool regulates temperature beautifully, wicking away moisture while holding warmth, and it does not need washing nearly as often as you might think — airing it over a chair for a day freshens it perfectly well.
For sofas and armchairs, look for something generous enough to wrap around your shoulders properly: roughly 130cm by 180cm is a good size. A merino or lambswool throw is soft enough for bare skin, while a chunkier British wool is tougher, heavier, and wonderfully hard-wearing in a hallway or at the foot of a bed. Fold rather than crumple your throws when not in use, and keep one in a basket by the sofa so it is always within reach on a cold evening.
Layering throws over a sofa also changes how a room feels. A wool throw draped over the back of a linen-covered armchair adds depth and texture, and it softens the look of a room that might otherwise feel a little stark in the low winter light.
Cushions are where layering becomes playful. The trick is to mix fabrics rather than match them exactly. Linen covers bring a relaxed, slightly crumpled quality that contrasts pleasantly with the smoothness of wool or the sheen of velvet. A linen cushion against a wool throw is one of the most satisfying combinations in a quiet room.
Build in odd numbers — three or five cushions on a sofa tends to look more natural than four — and vary the sizes so the arrangement has some shape to it. A larger square at the back, a smaller rectangle in front, and something textured tucked in beside them will read as considered rather than fussy.
The bedroom deserves the same treatment. A linen sheet against the skin, a wool or cotton blanket over that, and a duvet on top gives you three adjustable layers, which is far more practical than one very high tog duvet. On bitterly cold nights, a folded wool throw across the foot of the bed adds warmth exactly where you need it and can be kicked off without disturbing the rest.
Do not neglect the smaller corners. A chair by a window, a reading nook, a bench in a hallway — each benefits from a cushion and a throw within easy reach. A sheepskin over a wooden dining chair, for instance, transforms a cold seat into somewhere you will happily linger over a second cup of tea.
Natural fabrics last decades if treated kindly. Wool should be aired rather than washed frequently, and spot-cleaned where possible. Linen softens beautifully with each wash but is happiest dried flat or line-dried indoors away from direct heat, which can make the fibres brittle. Store out-of-season textiles clean, folded in cotton bags rather than sealed plastic, so they can breathe through the damp months.
Keep a few lavender bags among stored blankets to deter moths, and give everything a good shake and an airing before it comes back into use. A little care now means your layers will be ready, soft and warm, for many winters to come.
